An awful silence hung over the room, broken only by the crossing out of sentences and the crumpling of paper. (On Writing Well by William Zinsser)

An awful silence hung over the room, which was broken only by the crossing out of sentences and the crumpling of paper.

An awful silence hung over the room. It was broken only by the crossing out of sentences and the crumpling of paper.

The crossing out of sentences and the crumpling of paper were the only sounds that broke the awful silence hanging over the room.

You look awful. Is everything all right?

“While we stood in one of those silences that follow excitement, a trolley bus came by ….” (When My Girl Comes Home by V. S. Pritchett)

Apparently too tired to defend himself, John returned to his room in silence.

Not all city folk are used to the dead silence of the forest at night.

A full year’s silence was broken by his letter of yesterday.

Hang your coat on the wall and come to the table.

He just stood there with a cigarette hanging from his lips.

A portrait of the artist now hangs in the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

We then came to a room hung with many pictures depicting his years in exile.

He was the second convict who hanged for murder in just six months.

The prisoner hanged himself in his cell.

I decided to cross out the word because it did not sound right.

Cross off those items that have been taken care of.

She is one of those models who are crossing over to acting.

Crossing the desert is in effect a matter of life and death.

Not until after have I crumpled up dozens of pieces of paper could I finish the letter.
